Bologna has 100 hectares of disused railway or military areas which may be transformed, thus triggering a process of urban requalification with a high environmental impact. The abandoned public areas could serve new purposes for the city, hosting houses, o ice buildings and stores, hotel, tourist and restaurant facilities, etc.. The renovation, which will interest Bologna for the next two decades, will come along with the creation of new parks, facilities for the community, social housing and enhanced public transport.

Main interventions planned:
- Prati di Caprara - A new Urban Complex will be built on the former military area, stretching over 48 hectares between Via Sa i and the railway, with residential buildings, office buildings and stores (for a total built area of 180.000 mq), schools, car parks and a 20 hectares park.
- Ex Railway Areas (Ravone) - On the former railway areas between Viale Silvani and Via Sa i and Via Zanardi the project intends to requalify the historical buildings creating houses, o ice buildings and stores, car parks and new city park with a minimum surface of 4,5 hectares.
- Ex caserma Sani (old barracks) - The area covering over 10 hectares between Via Ferrarese and Via Stalingrado, owned by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, will host new houses, o ices, stores, a new city park and a school. An international call selected, in july 2017, the contractor for the implementation plan for this area.
- Staveco (ex military area) - The 9 hectares in the south of the city, next to the Giardini Margherita, will host judicial services with the aim to complete the offices already present in historic center. The project will include a public park connecting the city center with the hill, as well as an extension of the existing public car park.
- Ex caserma Mazzoni (old barracks) - A building complex will be built on the 4,6 hectares between Via Parisio and Via delle Armi. The complex will have a mixed usage with residential buildings (10% of which for social housing), o ice buildings and stores, including two new schools (kindergarten and primary).
- Ex caserma Masini (old barracks) - The buildings of the old barracks, occupying an area of 7.500 mq in the center of the city, will be recovered to host new houses, services and a hotel with car park.
